JOHN SIMMONS
I started taking pictures in 1965 and was mentored by Bobby Sengstacke. He turned me on to The Sweet Flypaper Of Life. Met Roy Decarava when I was 18. Shot pictures for The Chicago Daily Defender Newspaper and Muhammad Speaks. I received a scholarship to Fisk University on the basis of my photography. Upon graduation I received a scholarship to USC film school. Presently I work as a cinematography in Los Angeles. I've shot music videos, commercials, feature films and TV series. I've received prime time Emmy awards and have been nominated four times. I'm also nominated this year and we'll see what happens. I'm the vice president of the American Society of Cinematographers and have been a governor in The Television Academy of Arts and Sciences. My photographs are in the collections of The High Museum in Atlanta,The Getty Museum, The Center for Creative Photography, The Wesley and Missy Cochran Foundation, The Huston Museum of Fine Art, The Chicago Museum of ContemporaryPhotography. I've had lots of exhibits around the country. I'm carrying a camera everyday and I just keep on trying.
